5,000 years ago, two great early civilizations emerged side-by-side along the fertile floodplains of Mesopotamia and Egypt.  In Mesopotamia, the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the Sumerians built the world’s first cities and invented the world’s first writing.  They kept detailed economic records, penned some of the world’s first literature, and built massive stepped temples known as ziggurats.

The Egyptians were no slouches either. They learned to tame the Nile for agricultural purposes. They developed courts and a justice system. Their monuments were astounding. The Great Pyramid of Giza was originally 460 feet high and over seven football fields on each side. It was constructed of 2.3 million blocks averaging 2.5 tons each. They invented paper, using papyrus. They knew about geometry, and developed a numbering system that included fractions. They used a form of astronomy in their calendar, based on the star Sirius. Siriusly. They also invented the process of mummification.

Oh, one more thing. They made beer. Yeah, they made beer.

In the beginning…
Last year, Barley’s Smokehouse & Brewpub collaborated with Actual Brewing Company and North High Brewing Company, in association with the Ohio Historical Society, to develop a beer representative of one that might have been brewed in ancient Egypt.  We called it KA Amunet, named after the mummy in possession at the Ohio Historical Center, “The Hidden One.” The beer was presented at the Ohio Historical Center, and is the only time that it has ever been served.

Call it kismet!
Meanwhile, Great Lakes Brewing Company was also up to some collaborating. With the guidance of the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, they developed a beer that just could have been enjoyed in ancient Sumer.  Called Enkibru, it was presented exclusively at beer dinners in Cleveland and Chicago.

A serendipitous meeting of minds
On Saturday, March 29, Barley’s Smokehouse & Brewpub is hosting a collaboration evening that will include guest speakers, exclusive beers, and an inspired four-course dinner.

5,000 years ago, two advanced ancient civilizations coexisted side-by-side.  Today, two craft breweries coexist side-by-side here in Ohio.  It was inevitable that we’d come together for one night. Now, for the first time, you can experience these beers together (and more!). We invite you to our presentation called "From the Tigris to the Nile: A Sumerian-Egyptian Beer Dinner."
